Vox Clara - Music by Gabriel Jackson

Truro Cathedral Choir o.l.v. Christopher Gray

Regent brengt ons, na het recente succes van David Bednall, opnieuw een schitterende hedendaagse koor-cd – ditmaal met de fantasierijke en boeiende muziek van componist Gabriel Jackson.

Deze rijkelijk gevulde schijf bevat maar liefst acht première-opnames van de 22 tracks. Ze onthullen dat Gabriel Jackson (b1962) nog steeds sacrale koormuziek van de hoogste vindingrijkheid produceert, en met levendige zwier op opdrachten reageert. Zijn muziek kan – in een oogwenk – overschakelen van rijk gelaagde extase naar directe, verstilde intimiteit, bijvoorbeeld in het volkslied Cantate Domino.

Het helpt natuurlijk dat hij als voormalig kathedraalkoorzanger weet wat zangers drijft. De meest recente vrucht van zijn lange samenwerking met Truro Cathedral Choir is de verbluffende Kipling-setting That wind blowing and that tide (2015), een herdenking van de Eerste Wereldoorlog gecomponeerd in samenwerking met de jongenskoorzangers. Hier begeleidt Jacksons kenmerkende ‘organische opeenvolging’ van ideeën de luisteraar met zo’n aangrijpende eb en vloed dat men de zachtjes drijvende mist van het Westelijk Front voelbaar kan voelen. De jongens halen ook het maximale uit wat Jackson hun ‘aleatorische ruisende wind’ noemt in het Pinkstermotet Factus est repente, evenals de zeer effectieve gefluisterde mompelingen van ‘zij die in duisternis wonen’ in de vierde Advent Antiphon (‘O clavis David’). Met zijn compacte afmetingen doet de Truro Mass duidelijk denken aan de Tudor-meesters Byrd en Tye, nu door het strenge filter van Stravinsky gepasseerd.

Ook veel lof voor organist Luke Bond, die kalmeert met het adembenemend mooie koraalpreludium op Herzliebster Jesu en saxofonist Joel Garthwaite met acute gevoeligheid begeleidt in de Aria for Joel and Vicki. Garthwaite speelt afwisselend op sopraan-, alt- en tenorsaxofoons, waarmee hij het Kipling-stuk en de titeltrack van de cd versterkt.

Met boeiende en verhelderende noten van de componist en uitstekende techniek en productie door Gary Cole is deze glorieuze release onverslaanbaar.

This generously filled disc contains no fewer than eight premiere recordings among its 22 tracks. They reveal that Gabriel Jackson (b1962) continues to produce sacred choral music of the highest invention, responding to commissions with vivid panache. His music can – in an instant – switch from richly layered ecstasy to direct, hushed intimacy, for example in the anthem Cantate Domino.

It helps, of course, that as a former cathedral chorister he knows what makes singers tick. The most recent fruit of his long association with Truro Cathedral Choir is the stunning Kipling setting That wind blowing and that tide (2015), a First World War commemoration composed in collaboration with the boy choristers. Here, Jackson’s trademark ‘organic succession’ of ideas guides the listener with such a poignant ebb and flow that one can palpably sense the gently drifting fog of the Western Front. The boys also make the most of what Jackson terms their ‘aleatoric rushing wind’ in the Pentecostal motet Factus est repente, as well as the highly effective whispered mutterings of ‘those who dwell in darkness’ in the fourth Advent Antiphon (‘O clavis David’). With its compact dimensions, the Truro Mass is clearly redolent of the Tudor masters Byrd and Tye, now passed through the austere filter of Stravinsky.

High praise, too, for organist Luke Bond, who soothes with the heart-stoppingly gorgeous chorale prelude on Herzliebster Jesu and accompanies saxophonist Joel Garthwaite with acute sensitivity in the Aria for Joel and Vicki. Garthwaite features variously on soprano, alto and tenor saxes, enhancing the Kipling piece and the disc’s title-track.

With engaging and enlightening notes by the composer and superb engineering and production by Gary Cole, this glorious release is unbeatable.
