Cyrillus Kreek: The Suspended Harp of Babel

Vox Clamantis o.l.v. Jaan‑Eik Tulve

Een prachtige, betoverende opname van muziek van de Estse componist Cyrillus Kreek, die een aangrijpend pad baant door muziek van geloof en folkloristische oorsprong, en voortreffelijk uitgevoerd.

Telkens als ik Vox Clamantis in concert heb gehoord, was het een geweldige ervaring. Hun helderheid, hun precisie, hun pure muzikaliteit maken ze gemakkelijk een van de beste vocale ensembles die momenteel overal ter wereld actief zijn. Veel van de muziek op deze cd heb ik vrij recent in concert gehoord, in Tallinn, en het is waar dat, met ECM's geweldige techniek, de spanning van live optredens hier perfect is vastgelegd.

Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962) is een componist wiens naam pas langzaam is doorgedrongen tot het grote publiek, maar zijn muziek wordt in Estland veel gezongen en geliefd. Zijn koorstijl is diep beïnvloed door Estische volksmuziek, waarvan hij een verzamelaar was, en door de Lutherse hymnetraditie, terwijl hij ook teksten uit de rituelen van de Orthodoxe Kerk op muziek zette. Al deze zijn hier vertegenwoordigd, met aanvullend materiaal van Marco Ambrosini voor de nyckelharpa en de kannel (een soort citer), vrij uitgewerkt op basis van Kreek's materiaal; dit creëert een welkome variatie aan textuur en kleur.

Sommige overlappingen kunnen een beetje vreemd zijn: ik ben bijvoorbeeld niet echt overtuigd door de inval van de opening van Orthodoxe Vespers in de instrumentale begeleiding van Jacob’s Dream, hoe dramatisch effectief het ook is. Misschien nog verrassender, maar ik denk effectiever, is wat Paul Griffiths treffend beschrijft als het ‘gesprek’ tussen Kreek en Machaut dat de cd afsluit. De melodie voor Kreeks gedeeltelijke zetting van Psalm 103 (104) die volgt op Jacob’s Dream zal overigens bekend zijn bij iedereen die Rachmaninovs Vigil kent, hoewel het hier natuurlijk in het Estisch is gezet. Twee van de meest indrukwekkende werken zijn Bless the Lord, my soul en By the rivers of Babylon, die beide absoluut ideale voertuigen zijn voor Vox Clamantis, wiens precieze plaatsing van akkoorden, geholpen door onberispelijke stemming, betekent dat elk harmonisch detail zo helder is als een bel. Een echte aanrader.

Whenever I have heard Vox Clamantis in concert it has been an amazing experience. Their clarity, their precision, their sheer musicianship make them easily one of the best vocal ensembles currently active anywhere in the world. Much of the music on this disc I heard in concert quite recently, in Tallinn, and it is true to say that, with ECM’s superb engineering, the frisson of live performance is captured here to perfection.

Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962) is a composer whose name has filtered through only slowly to the wider public but his music is widely sung and loved in Estonia. His choral style is deeply informed by Estonian folk music, of which he was a collector, and by the Lutheran hymn tradition, while he also set texts from the rites of the Orthodox Church. All these are represented here, with additional material by Marco Ambrosini for the nyckelharpa and the kannel (a kind of zither), freely elaborated from Kreek’s material; this creates a welcome variety of texture and colour.

Some of the overlapping can be a little curious: I am not really convinced by the irruption of the opening of Orthodox Vespers into the instrumental accompaniment to Jacob’s Dream, for example, dramatically effective though it undeniably is. Arguably even more surprising, but, I think, more effective, is what Paul Griffiths aptly describes as the ‘conversation’ between Kreek and Machaut that closes the disc. The melody for Kreek’s partial setting of Psalm 103 (104) which follows Jacob’s Dream will, incidentally, be familiar to anyone who knows Rachmaninov’s Vigil, though it is of course set here in Estonian. Two of the most impressive works are Bless the Lord, my soul and By the rivers of Babylon, both of which are absolutely ideal vehicles for Vox Clamantis, whose precise placing of chords, assisted by impeccable tuning, means that every harmonic detail is as clear as a bell. Highly recommended.
